Unit Plans
Novel Resource Guide
I wrote a Thematic Book Unit for the novel Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Giff. I chose Pictures of Hollis Woods because it is an adventure packed story of a young girl who searches for belonging. Students will learn about the difference between being wanted and being needed by others. Students will be able to explore how friendship and family are important. This book empowers students to think about meaningful relationships in their own lives. I think this book is perfect for a middle school English classroom because students in this age group are searching for belonging themselves.
This unit is focused on teaching the themes of abandonment, hope, belonging, self-identity, art, and friendship. The unit includes engaging activities and end's with a final assessment project. Please follow the link to take a look at the activities I have created for this unit.

Heroes Unit Plan
For one of my field experience classes I worked in a 6th grade Reading class at Westland Middle School. My class was studying heroes through serveral different fiction and non-fiction texts.
I created a unit plan on Heroes, based on the class I taught in, that challenged students to explore several modern and historical heroes. I even challenged my students to think of a hero in their own lives. This unit plan is complete with 10 different lesson plans and a culminating project.

Content Specific Unit Plan
For this unit plan, I collaborated with 3 other English Education majors to come up with an End of Course Assessment.
Then, I created a unit backwards map and a framing lesson plan to meet the objectives assessed in the ECA.
Our unit is focused on teaching short stories. Take a look at the materials on the right to see an example of how I plan to prepare my students for an End of Course Assessment. The objectives I set for the unit are as follows:
. To successfully evaluate short stories students should be able to:
-Collaborate effectively with peers
-Communicate an author’s purpose
-Identify point of view
-Locate literary devices and figurative language used in texts
-Determine cause and effect
-Define meaning of vocabulary words in context
-Analyze the meaning of symbols
-Evaluate an author's use/choice of themes
