Lake Orion High School
Speical Note About LO ELA Curriculum:
All core ELA classes at Lake Orion High School follow a similar structure for units.
All classes have:
1. Whole Class Novel Unit: Traditional unit where all students read and analyze the same text.
2. Leveled Book Unit: This unit is structured so that students can pick a book from a text set based on a common topic. These texts are a variety of levels to cater to varying student needs.
3. Independent Book Unit: Students can choose a book on their own to read and analyze for this unit.
4. Non-fiction: All students will study a unit of non-fiction and write a non-fiction piece.
5. Grade Focus Unit: This unit changes depending on what class students are in.
Lake Orion's curriculum is dedicated to offering students choice and instilling a love of reading.
English Language Arts 9/Honors ELA 9
Introduction to Genres

This course covers a variety of material from fiction, to Shakespeare, to non-fiction.

Books: To Kill a Mockingbird, Fahrenheit 451, Unwind, and Romeo and Juliet.
English Language Arts 10
Focus on American Literature

This class covers several works of American literature including poetry, fiction novel and short stories, and non-fiction.

Books: Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, Ordinary People, and Perks of Being a Wallflower.
English 12 Expository Reading and Writing

This class covers works of non-fiction from different sources including articles, books, podcasts, videos, and movies.

P7 club is an after school club at Lake Orion. The club is student led and is a safe place for students to meet and talk about their faith.

Every month at Lake Orion, we have meetings with our students about topics that are not often covered in class. Previously these programs involved an online course.
