Part 3: LMS Email
Good afternoon LOHS families,
As you are aware, remote learning comes with a lot of challenges. While learning outside of school simply cannot compare to being together, I want to make it the best experience that I can for you and your students. We are lucky at Lake Orion to have access to a lot of amazing remote learning resources like Microsoft suite and Powerschool. In preparation for this school year, I have analyzed different educational technology tools to determine what would be the best fit for my classes this year. I have settled on using Canvas. I chose Canvas because it will be a class hub of information for you and your students. Canvas allows me to assign work, assessments, create calendars, group work, class discussions, and announcements. If you would like to browse the website to get an idea about the learning management system, please visit: https://community.canvaslms.com/
The Canvas application will allow me to send you frequent messages, so that you are up to date with our plan. There is a chat feature of Canvas, so students can instant message me while I am online to ask questions about content, or just to chat. Students will be able to use the Mircosoft Suite in conjunction with Canvas. Students can submit their work from Microsoft to the Canvas software for grading. You and your student will be able to see grades in the Canvas platform. Students can expect to use a variety of online resources for learning this semester. I plan to use FlipGrid and Quizlet with students which can easily be implemented into the Canvas website.
I understand it can be overwhelming to learn new software, especially when we may not be able to meet in person to go over it. I will create a Canvas class for your student’s class and you will receive an invite to the email that is provided in PowerSchool. Students will receive an email through their school provided email address. The instructions for signing up and creating an account will be in that email. However, I understand that you will need further training upon signing up. I plan to create a series of videos explaining how to use Canvas. There will be several videos (less than five minutes each) that your students are required to view. I will also provide separate videos for parents/guardians to watch! Please look forward to receiving these tutorials. I am confident that the use of Canvas will be a game changer for the upcoming school year. It will be a source of regularity during a year that may be very irregular. Please reach out if you have and questions or concerns at this stage of the process. I will be readily available to help. Look forward to further communication about Canvas in the coming days/weeks.
All my best,
Ms. Genord!
